Disclosure: I did receive some, not all, of the product reviewed in this post in exchange for sharing my honest thoughts and opinions on that. I didn’t receive any other money besides product compensation. All the opinions are 100% my own. I received product from Barney Butter, Home Plate, and B Happy! 🙂
Thank you Amanda for letting me link this post up for Thinking out Loud Thursday (too.)
The world of nut butter is a tough one to navigate, even if you can’t have peanut butter, because there are so many options. That’s a blessing, isn’t it? And I went on a quest, a journey (like Bilbo), except from my computer, to find the best ones. This is the incredible blessing we have of living in America, and even though I don’t deserve it, I hope, by God’s grace, that I will never take it for granted.
There, of course, are the really popular brands that you see all over Instagram which include:
to list only a few….
Then there are the start-up companies that are growing increasingly popular like Nut Butter Nation, and I’ve also discovered a new section of foodies/health bloggers that love Nikki’s Coconut Butter and Philosophie Coconut Butter.
Are you overwhelmed yet with the amazingness of how God has made such a varied world where there can be so many different versions of nut butter? The clincher is that… they all taste different.
So I set out on a quest… to find the best nut butters and this is my first assessment for you all.. Maybe you’ll find some new ones, be reassured of your love for one of your favorites, or be shocked at the variety that exists in this ONE part of the food industry. I didn’t want to be picky or ungrateful, but I wanted to wade through and share my favorites with those of my friends that love nut butter too.
I wanted to also find a few ‘unsung brand,’ ones that people don’t talk about on social media, the gems that are hidden.
In that quest I found 3 hidden gems. The reviews for those nut butters are in these posts:
Now, I did have some favorites among all of the nut butters I have tried so far. I want to give you an idea of which nut butters work best for different purposes. Who knows? Maybe you’ll have 6 boxes of nut butter on your porch next week? 😉
Number One Was….
Purpose: Dessert… Eat it with a spoon. No other peanut butter I have eaten has tasted that good straight from the jar. They all have various mix-ins, and they all taste good, added to cereal, oatmeal, and ice-cream.
Texture: 8/10 – It’s a bit chunky, so if you aren’t used to chunky, you might have a hard time getting used to Bhappy, but I promise you that the taste FAR outweighs the chunkiness.
Price: 8/10 – It’s worth it. Although I received the first box of jars for free, I would 100% buy another box, just because this peanut butter was so delicious and a huge treat for my family.
Purpose: The amazing drizzle factor that you can get out of a Wild Friends jar is pretty ‘fantasmagorical.’ And they are coming out with more and more flavors of peanut butter, protein butter, and almond butter. The peanut butter tastes amazing, swirled into yogurt or spread on ice cream.
Texture: 8/10 – The creamy smooth texture of this Wild Friends is so good. It can be a little bit ‘gritty’ sometimes, but in general, the texture is A-Amazing.
Price: 7/10 – I love the Wild Friends Jars, but they can be a bit pricey, if you get them off of their website. I actually found that the best place to buy them in bulk is from Walmart, where I got six jars of their amazing Chocolate Coconut Peanut Butter for about $40.00.
Number 3 happens to be!
Taste: 9/10 – It’s really good. It’s simple, and it’s basically peanuts, sugar, and palm oil. I’m kind of a bigger fan of peanut butter without HFCS, and the 3 ingredient list on this really appealed to me. It’s a bit sweet, but not too sweet.
Purpose: Dollop on everything! You can’t really drizzle this stuff as well as Wild Friends, but the creamy dollop it makes is . . . beautiful. Even though I can’t express the beauty of God’s different textures and tastes adequately through Instagram, this one, I assure you is just right.
Texture: 9/10 – Smooth. It’s not gritty at all. They do have a crunchy version, so that’s not ‘smooth,’ but it’s just as good, and it works well for crunchy peanut butter cookies.
Price: 8/10 – It’s a pretty good price on Amazon for 5 jars ($29.95 for 6 jars.) It’s not as cost efficient as Kirkland peanut butter, but it’s a little bit tastier and a bit sweeter.
The Number Four that Took the Cake was?
Taste: 9/10 – It was SO good for a cashew butter. The addition of the coconut flakes in the nut butter made it crunchy and added just a little bit of extra flavor and sweetness.
Purpose: If Wild Friend’s drizzles well, but you are allergic to peanuts, this is the BEST alternative I have found. It’s very drizzly (as long as you leave it out of the refrigerator.), and it would make your morning bowl of oats, yogurt, or smoothie look ‘perfecto-mundo.’
Texture: 9/10 If you like bits of coconut in your nut butter (not just the coconut flavor), you will like this.
Price: 7/10 – It’s not SUPER expensive, but it’s not super cheap either. If you want sort of a ‘treat jar’ of nut butter, this would be the one to get.
Number 5 was a little bit of a different nut butter…
Taste: 10/10 – For almond butter, this was the best I’ve ever had. I have had a Maranatha brand, but the smoothness in this almond butter blew me away. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Vanilla Espresso flavor, but that’s mostly because I’m not a coffee gal. I loved all the other flavors SO much.
Purpose: It doesn’t really drizzle. At least the packets didn’t, but it spreads on everything. I put it on bread, mixed it into yogurt, put it on bars, and rice cakes. This is such a good alternative to peanut butter if you are allergic!
Texture: 10/10 – ‘Nuff said… This stuff was so on point when it comes to texture.
Price: 8/10 – For such a yummy almond butter like Barney Butter, I would say it’s worth it to stock up on a jar every once in a while. Or you can go all in and stock up on Barney Butter alone. 🙂
Number 6… Last but CERTAINLY not least…
You Fresh Naturals Muscle Butter
Taste: 9/10 – In a lot of ways, this butter is in a class all its own. It’s muscle butter. It has protein powder in it, and I’ve gained 2 pounds of … well… 🙂 The flavors are so varied but my favorites have been Glazed Donut and Carrot Cake so far. I was blessed to win 7 jars of the muscle butter, and I shared 4 of the jars with some friends. Now I have the Carrot Cake Butter, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Muscle Frosting, and the Caramel Spice Butter left, and I must say that the Carrot Cake one is going down the fastest. 🙂
Purpose: These don’t drizzle, but they taste really good on icecream or off the spoon or on a sandwich. When you put them on icecream, it forms this sort of shell on top of it, and it’s kind of like chocolate on your icecream.
Texture: 8/10 – I understand that these are kind of gritty because they have protein powder and other mix-ins in them, so if you don’t love gritty, you may not love these. However, I think the taste far outweighs the gritty texture. I kind of like the gritty texture, especially in the Carrot Cake flavor, because it makes me think that I’m eating bits of carrot cake.
Price: 8/10 – The price for a small jar of this delicious butter is worth it, but I wouldn’t buy it every week. You kind of have to budget it out.
And there you have it… 🙂
This quest is not over, but I’ve been so blessed to collaborate with some companies for a few samples here and there and buy my own for this experiment.
I hope this will make your quest for a nut butter a bit clearer, but if not, maybe you’ll have a bunch of different ones to share with others over the coming days and weeks.
Well, the quest has just begun, and through it, I want to encourage the girls who are afraid of the healthy fat in nut butter, that NUT butter was a huge blessing to me in regaining weight, life, health, and clarity. God made nut butter. He made fat. He made you to need fat, and it is okay and WONDERFUL to give thanks to Him for it.
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
The ones I hope to try and objectively review in the quest over the next couple months will start with…
Philosophie Coconut Butter
I haven’t tried it yet, but I just received it today, so I’m looking forward to reviewing it and sharing Sophie, the AMAZING small business owner’s story. The stories behind these businesses are probably my favorite parts about them + the tasty nut butter.
The other ones on the list include:
Justin’s Almond Butter
Nut Butter Nation
Ok, now you tell me, what is your favorite peanut, almond, cashew, coconut butter?
Thoughts: What is the most important thing to you in a nut butter? (Texture, taste, price, or purpose?)
