What is the worst enemy of a girl with an eating disorder? It’s a number. And it’s not just the number on the scale. It could be the number from your BMI, the body fat percentage, the waist measurement, or the calories in a cookies.
Numbers aren’t just numbers any more for a girl struggling with an eating disorder. Numbers are consuming, something that stresses her out, keeps her awake at night, makes her stay on the computer for hours browsing in order to figure out ‘ideal weights’, ‘calorie needs’, ‘calories burned,’ or restaurant dish ‘calorie counts.’
It’s all a game of numbers that becomes obsessive, and let me tell you one thing. I’m not a health professional, but for girls who just don’t need to be spending more time looking at numbers these are things I want to say straight from my heart to yours:
Those numbers don’t determine you as a person.
Those numbers don’t make your loved one love you more or less.
Those numbers are just that. numbers. They aren’t your salvation in Jesus Christ. They aren’t your life or your breath.
Those numbers won’t make you any happier. Happiness and joy aren’t determined by numbers.
Don’t get me wrong. Numbers are not bad. It’s just, at this time in my life, I’m trying to stay away from them as much as possible. Getting on the scale doesn’t really make me happier. Measuring my waist doesn’t make my heart swell up with joy, even if the number is the same. These don’t, and they can’t determine my happiness.
By what is happiness determined? From where does true joy flow?
True joy flows from Christ, the fountain of all hope. True joy comes from knowing the power of and trusting in the hope of the resurrection, because our Lord goes to prepare a place for His children. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52, “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”
Isn’t that an AWESOME promise? To look forward to that is like not being able to understand yet thinking about the best gift we could ever possibly receive. It’s undeserved, yet that’s what makes it BEAUTIFUL!!!
