Today’s podcast episode, I decided to go solo, because I wanted to think out loud about something (and I wasn’t sure I could ask an interviewee the right questions about it.) I’ve been guilty of this, and I wanted to touch on my own struggles and how the Lord is enabling me to fight them. I’m still wrestling with this one myself, and I didn’t want my interviewee to be confused while I talked through these things on the podcast. I’m talking about today…. orthorexia… on Instagram. I’m digging into my own struggles, my own temptations to compare, and learning victory in each step.
First of all, what is the definition of ‘orthorexia?’

a medical condition in which the sufferer systematically avoids specific foods in the belief that they are harmful.’
So…. this is something that I’ve found myself tempted to do over and over again. I’ve found myself influenced by Instagram trends and thinking that I should only be eating salads, smoothies, and bowls with veggies and meat.
Now all those things are GOOD; they are all gifts from God, but to avoid other things like bread, yogurt, cheese because of fear isn’t right either. It leads to an obsession with certain kinds of food and an irrational fear of other foods. I still eat bread, yogurt, cheese, icecream, and other foods that I don’t often see on Instagram, but there have been days I find myself trying to ‘avoid’ them. Why? I’m letting my decisions be dictated by comparing myself to the way others eat instead of glorifying God and thanking God for all foods!
I’m so guilty of this, so I don’t want to point fingers at anyone for ‘causing’ me to think this way. I’m responsible for that wrong perception, for that wrong look at food.
Romans 14:1-3 says, “ Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things.2 For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables.3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him’
God allows for flexibility in our eating, especially when it came to the New Testament, and He said that meats, which were previously called unclean in the OT, were available for them to eat.
God’s law is my standard; God is my standard for what I eat, and it shouldn’t be Instagram.

To end this post, I want to share a varied day of eats with you. I’ve really been trying to vary the eats lately and not get myself stuck in food ruts so here’s a ‘semi-full’ day of eats from Tuesday.
Breakfast Before a Short Run: Siggi’s Yogurt with a Scoop of PB and Banana (I also ate some unpictured almonds and chocolate.)
Lunch was a cup of Purely Pinole with hazelnut butter, chocolate, banana and pineapple. This was the ‘Brown Sugar and Cinnamon’ flavor. (I received the Purely Pinole cups to test out and share!)
Dinner was some cheesy oats with an egg and more cheese + some salad.
Dessert was more of this amazing banana bread with icecream and PB. This week I’m re-introducing (en masse) all dairy back into my diet after the ‘loose elimination diet.’ I didn’t follow the elimination diet 100%, but I think it helped us figure out just what foods are probably the biggest offenders for my digestive system. I’m excited to now have more of a plan for helping my digestive system heal, if the Lord wills, and being able to eat (hopefully) all the foods without discomfort in 4-6 months or however long it takes!
My midnight snack was a big mug of cereal with more peanut butter and banana, but I didn’t take a picture. I’ll just tell you that it was good.
