Meditation is a HUGE subject lately, and I really wanted to touch on how it’s been so beneficial and such a blessing to me as a daughter of God, a Christian, and someone in recovery.
What do I mean when I say meditation?
1) I actually don’t mean emptying your mind, because i don’t think that’s really possible. If my mind was empty, there is just so much opportunity for the devil to fill it with wrong thoughts or for my mind to wander to the right things.
2) I actually mean, ‘Filling your mind with the truth, the right thoughts, edifying truthful facts that keep you centered especially when you are struggling.
It’s kind of like FILLING your body with nourishing, soul nourishing, body nourishing, healthy, yummy, delicious food. And that (for me) includes: sugar, donuts, salads, smoothies, cookies, and icecream.
Today I’m talking about filling your mind as a Christian with brain food, meditation ‘food’ that will center you on the right things, center you on the truth, especially when the temptation to listen to the lies is SO real.
This is the very first verse that often comes to my mind when I’m especially struggling with:
Bad Body Image Thoughts
In Philippians 4 the Apostle Paul encourages the Philippians to not think on the wrong things but focus on the right things.
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9)
One of the biggest things that I struggled with in recovery is remembering Who God is and remembering who I am in Christ. It’s easy to get mired into my problems and just start thinking from a perspective that is based on my feelings or circumstances…
But one of the most encouraging things is remember who God is and that God calls me His child.
This isn’t super complicated, but these are some of the verses that I repeat in my head, pray, and keep in front of my eyes throughout the day, because the battle for recovery is REAL. The spiritual battle is so real, and these verses have really served to equip me in the battle.
I know many of you are facing your own battles as well, and I wanted to encourage you to look to God’s Word, look to Jesus with these truths; these are true no matter whether our feelings tell us they are or not.
Here are some of the Truth Bombs I often read or think about From God’s Word For Meditation:
#1) Feeling like a failure? Look to Jesus. He has walked the road before you. He has already conquered.
Hebrews 12:2-4, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.’
#2) Feeling weak? Look at the One who made the Universe. Your problems are never bigger than Him.
‘Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. The Lord lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground. Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God: Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains. He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry.’ (Psalm 147:5-9)
#3) Not Experiencing God’s love? Feeling spiritually dry? Nothing, not even feelings can separate you from His love.
‘Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ (Romans 8:37-39)
#4) Thinking that recovery is impossible? Feeling regret over the damage that has been done to your body. Thinking it can never be repaired. Read about God’s POWER to heal, to restore, His promise to forgive, to reconcile, to make new.
‘Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed. (Joel 2:23-27)
#5) Feeling Dark and hopeless and broken? The Lord uses brokenness. He is near to the brokenhearted. He binds up their wounds.
‘Therefore also now, saith the Lord, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God?’ (Joel 2:12-14)
#6) Feeling lost. Not knowing even where to start on attacking recovery, attacking life battles? Praise God! Thank God for His mercy; sing His praises, seek Him!
‘O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord. Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore.’ (Psalm 105:1-4)
#7) Feeling worthless, as if your life doesn’t mean anything. Look at Who God is, who God made you to be.
‘O lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.’ (Psalm 139:1-6)
#8) Feeling Stressed and Full of Concern, Anxiety, and Worry? – Christ came as our peace. He is our peace with God; and no one can ever take that from you.
‘But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments containedin ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.’ (Ephesians 2:13-17)
Most of all…. BE OF GOOD CHEER! In this world, you might have tribulations Christian, but be of good cheer. Jesus Christ has overcome the world, the flesh, the devil, the grave, the condemnation of God’s wrath against us, and in Him you are no longer without hope, without life, without God.
That is a fact. And no feeling, no rainy day, no lies in your head will ever change that. Trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved!
These are just a tiny tidbit of the riches, the precious pearls of God’s Truth that are in Scripture; I feel like I just skimmed the surface, and I hope to share more of them for meditation in the future! Meditation isn’t complicated; you don’t need to stop and not do anything. Take the truth with you throughout the day. Write Scripture on post-it notes and put them on your mirror (especially when you struggle with body image).
Listen to a Psalm and think about it. Pray the Scripture…. <3 Meditate on God’s Wondrous works and His incredible grace. Think about Jesus and His sacrifice, His victory, His compassion, His miraculous work in you, and those truths WILL shut out the bad thoughts, the lies that are in your head.
Thank you Ivanna for inspiring this post on meditation! <3 I loved the guest post on your blog about it.
