Let’s face it y’all. There are days that I still deal with really miserable, bad body image. I’m thankful, that by God’s love and grace and realizing that my identity is in Christ, not my weight or accomplishments or successes, these days are fewer and farther between. But… I am not perfect, and these days do pop up every once in a while.
This is something that every girl deals with, maybe not every girl, but I think many girls do deal with this, so I thought it would be a really appropo topic to talk about for ‘Take Care of Your Temple Tuesday’ with Lyss. <3 Know that you are not alone on those days, and that there are ways and truths to speak to your mind when you are especially struggling.
What do these bad body image days feel like?
I look in the mirror and though I hate looking in the mirror and don’t really want to be focused on myself I just can’t help but noticing that I look what I think is ‘fat.’
And my mind starts to wander to places that are bad.
This is where Philippians 4:8 comes in. ‘Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.’
Those things are things from God’s Word, words of truth.
What does God say about me? ‘And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.’ 1 Corinthians 6:11
He says that I am WASHED. I am sanctified, and no day of bad body image can change that.
Knowing that I’m God’s child and that He promises His kindness to His children is something that always keeps me grounded and centered on those hard hard days when:
I feel fat and sad
I don’t want to eat anything because I think I’ll eat too much.
Or I sat around all day and I’m worried about not burning enough calories.
It seems that on those days especially the reminders of God’s kindness are like sweet balm to my hurting soul.
‘In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee. For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith theLord that hath mercy on thee.
O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones. And all thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of thy children.’ (Isaiah 54:8-13)
I am so thankful that God is just and kind. He doesn’t let iniquity or sin get by, but because of the blood of Jesus Christ I will not be utterly forsaken even on those days when I have fallen and sinned and failed or on those days when my faith is so weak and my mind is so tortured and sad.
Even when I am tossed about, He remains my rock in every storm including those days of bad body image, those days of bloating, when those bad thoughts creep in and threaten to overwhelm me.
And let’s talk about bloating… because it can get bad in recovery.
Before my eating disorder, I didn’t get bloated very often, but now I get bloated about once a day. It doesn’t quite have any rhyme or reason, but I’m thinking about and pondering ways to help my poor little gut heal. I really do not want to be bad at caring for my body as the temple of the Holy Spirit, and I’m praying about and thinking about the right medical course to take.
That is definitely an ongoing process, something I talked about here.
I have discovered that there are certain foods that are ALWAYS easy on the stomach when I’m bloated in a really bad, uncomfortable way:
Yogurt Bowls: A bowl of yogurt with some fruit, peanut butter, and maybe some pumpkin always seems to do wonders for the stomach!
I hope these tips help you on those days that you might be struggling with bloating… And remember, bloating happens to everyone and it DOES NOT change your worth as a precious human soul, made in God’s image for His glory!
Now… let’s not leave you without another Holiday themed Waffle recipe. 🙂
This one would be ‘Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread’ Waffles. Did you check out the ‘Eggnog’ ones? Kodiak Cakes are a very basic protein rich mix, but the fun thing is that you can dress them up. You can add things like:
Pumpkin Creamer …. and more.
Let’s just get right into these, shall we? 🙂
Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread Waffles
Soft pumpkin flavored waffles stuffed with chocolate chips and pumpkin.
- 1 cup Kodiak Cakes Buttermilk Mix
- 1/2 cup pumpkin
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 cup Coffee Mate Natural Bliss Pumpkin Coffee Creamer
- 3/4 cup soymilk
- 1/4 c. chocolate chips
