How do you encourage others? It’s not something that always come easily to me, but it’s something that is so VITAL to LOVE. It’s so vital to loving on others and reminding others of who they are, and ultimately, who God is.
1 John 4:7-8, ‘Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.’
(Me) thinking about this subject on my walk this evening…
That has lead me to think about my words and actions. How does my life build up or tear down others? How do I care for others and love others and show them just a fraction of the love that God has mercifully poured out on me?
Ephesians 4:29, ‘Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.’
So then, my question is, ‘How do we best encourage others instead of tearing them down?’
Everybody encourages in different ways. We all have different gifts. Romans 12:6-8 says that, ‘Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.’
It’s not that just one person has the ‘gift of encouragement,’ but that we all find different ways to lift others up which might include:
Smiling (Yes … Smiling)
Sending Numerous Funny/Joyful Texts to Your Besties
Emailing Verses/Prayers to Friends/Family
Cooking a Meal
And the list could go on.. and on…
So then, this list of 5 things isn’t something that I’m going to impose on you, because I want to leave this open to you… How do you encourage? What gifts have you been given to share with others? Here are some of my ideas, and I would love to see yours at the end of the post.
1. Smile. Simply Smile. Share the joy that you have in Jesus. Share His abundant life with them through a smile.
Romans 15:13, ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.’
Philippians 4:4, ‘Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.’
John 16:24, ‘Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.’
1 Peter 1:8, ‘Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,’
2. Remind them how simple life is and how God takes care of the world and He will take care of them.
Genesis 28:15, ‘Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”’
Hebrews 13:8, ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.’
John 3:16, ‘“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.’
1 Peter 5:7, ‘Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.’
3. Make them dinner and just spend time listening to them and enjoying each other’s company.
1 Thessalonians 5:11, ‘Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.’
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, ‘Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.’
Proverbs 27:17, ‘Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.’
4. Take them out to look at the blue sky and remind them that the same God who made that sky made them and is involved in every happening of their life.
Isaiah 46:10, ‘Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;’
Daniel 4:35, ‘“All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, But He does according to His will in the host of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can ward off His hand Or say to Him, ‘What have You done?”
Luke 1:37, “For nothing will be impossible with God.”‘
1 Samuel 2:10, ‘”Those who contend with the LORD will be shattered; Against them He will thunder in the heavens, The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; And He will give strength to His king, And will exalt the horn of His anointed.”
5. Bake them a goodie and tell them that you love them. <3 Don’t wait till tomorrow, because tomorrow may never come.
1 John 5:18-19, ‘My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. ‘
Galatians 5:13, ‘You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh ; rather, serve one another humbly in love.’
Hebrews 9:14, ‘How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!’
Last of all, but not least remind them, what they are enabled to do in Christ.
1 Peter 2:2-4 says, ‘Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.’
Through and in Jesus Christ we have ALL things we need for life and godliness. There is no reason to be hopeless or despair, because Jesus Christ is ALL in ALL!
‘Only one life twill soon be past… Only what’s done for Christ will last.’
